Statement on the DC Mid-Air Collision

January 31, 20250

Tragedy has struck in Washington, DC with the horrific mid-air collision of a commercial passenger airliner, American Eagle Flight 5342, and an Army Black Hawk helicopter, on Wednesday. Americans mourn the loss of life as it strikes deeply at our common humanity.

The investigation into the collision by the National Transportation Safety Board will hopefully provide answers and help prevent similar disasters in the future. But, now, the families of the victims need all the support Americans can give them as they deal with the unimaginable.

This support has come from all quarters of the country and from figures public and private. In a normal administration, the President of the United States would be the first to offer sincere condolences and words of comfort as “healer-in-chief.” However, not today.

The Washington County Democratic Party condemns the remarks of President Donald Trump – at a press conference Thursday – who used this catastrophe for petty political gimmicks, blaming social programs and progressive ideology for contributing to the accident, without evidence. Rather than taking responsibility and leading a path forward as a principled leader would, Trump attempts to link past administrations, again, without evidence, to Wednesday’s collision.

Regardless of the causes eventually identified in the investigation, Trump again demonstrates in this moment that he lacks the moral character either to lead or unite our country in a time of crisis.
