Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Convention work?

Here is what you can expect when arriving at the Convention (doors open at 9 am):

  1. Credentialing/check-in:
    • If you pre-registered online (click here to do that now!), you will give your name at the credentialing table and then sign the Democratic Pledge.
    • If you are a walk-in, you will be asked to fill out a form so we can verify in the voter database that you are registered to vote in Washington County. Then, you will sign the Democratic Pledge.
    • If you are not from Washington County, no problem! You can attend as a guest (but you won’t be able to vote).
  2. Breakfast!
    • A table in the hall will provide free breakfast. Enjoy!
    • This is a good time to mingle with WCDP leaders and fellow Democrats in the County.
  3. Convention
    • The Convention will formally start at 10 am (or when the last voter in line by 10 am has been processed through credentialling).
    • We will follow the agenda listed on this page.
    • This is YOUR Convention, so feel free to ask questions!
  4. Lunch
    • After the Convention is adjourned, lunch will be provided to all!
  5. For the new Executive Committee…
    • An onboarding session will follow lunch, to welcome the new leaders of WCDP.
Am I qualified to run?

If you are a Democrat registered and eligible to vote in Washington County, then YES, you can run for any office at the Convention. We seek community members who, above all else, are passionate about creating change, electing Democrats, and, more importantly, being a good team player. You can serve as an Officer or a District Representative on the Executive Committee member.

If I get elected, how will I know how to do my job?

WCDP will hold an onboarding session right after lunch on Convention day (1-2 pm). We will cover the basics then. Additional training and mentorship for new members of the Executive Committee will be provided throughout the year. The Tennessee Democratic Party (TNDP) also holds training and information meetings for all members. In the meantime, you can review the Handbook of Roles & Responsibilities by clicking here.

I want to join the leadership team!

Fantastic, we’d love to have you on the team! You can run for an Officer or District Representative position on the Executive Committee. Click here to read the Roles & Responsibilities for these positions.

Here is how the process works at the Convention:

  • When nominations open for the position you are interested in, have someone nominate you for that position.
  • You will be asked whether you accept the nomination.
  • When nominations close for the position you are interested in, every nominated candidate will have two minutes to introduce themselves and share why they are running for the position.
  • After declarations, the floor will be open for questions to the candidates.
  • Once the questions period is over, we will vote!
Can I run for multiple positions?

You may run for any position, but you can only hold one position at a time.

How are the new bylaws different from the previous ones?

They are not! The leadership of WCDP and the state party (TNDP) are proposing to continue using the Bylaws we negotiated in 2023 since they have worked well for us.
