Oppose All Constitutional Amendments

They may ‘sound good’ at first read, but the devil’s literally in the details.

• Amendment 1 – The “No rights to bail for certain crimes” Amendment: People could be held without bail before being convicted. Pretrial jail time can mean losing a job, home, or income. Families suffer when a parent or provider is locked up. This makes it harder to hire and work with an attorney. If ultimately found not guilty, that lost time cannot be given back. Serious crimes deserve consideration before trial, but our judges already have the ability to deny bail in extreme circumstances. This amendment is extreme and unnecessary.
• Amendment 2 – The “No State Property Tax” Amendment: It would give the same constitutional protection to a homeowner and a corporation owning millions or billions of dollars in property. This disproportionately benefits large corporations and makes TN a hotspot for data centers to want to build here (ultimately destroying our neighborhoods, polluting our air & water, and costing us more in utilities, when residents are expected to foot the bill).
• Amendment 3 – The “Victims’ Rights” Amendment: Victims’ rights in TN are covered under the VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) legislation. How VINE is being enforced could be an issue and should be addressed in the legislature and courts, not added as a constitutional amendment. This amendment will make parole and release proceedings slower, more complicated, and potentially more difficult, even when someone is legally eligible for release. Privately owned prison systems benefit more from this than the victims of crimes!
