Washington County Democratic Party Requests Answers From Washington County Election Commission
The Washington County Democratic Party (WCDP) announces that it formally sent a letter to the Washington County Election Commission (WCEC), expressing outrage and demanding immediate action in response to a recent letter sent by the TN Election Coordinator under the office of Secretary of State Tre Hargett. The letter in question was addressed to newly naturalized citizens and individuals with foreign-sounding names, asking them to “confirm their citizenship” and warning them of the serious repercussions of voting illegally.
We unequivocally condemn this action as a blatant attempt at voter intimidation and suppression of citizens of the United States. Targeting specific groups of citizens based on their names and background is discriminatory and undermines the democratic principles that our country stands for.
“As a naturalized US citizen myself, I find it outrageous that the TN Coordinator of Elections is targeting our community with these threatening letters,” said Sylvain Bruni, Chair of the Washington County Democratic Party. “That is why we are asking our Washington County Election Commission for answers on this matter.”
In its letter to the WCEC, WCDP urges the Commission to thoroughly investigate this matter and to take a firm stand against these undemocratic practices. WCDP requests that the WCEC push back against Secretary of State Tre Hargett’s actions and work diligently to protect the integrity of our elections. Additionally, WCDP demands answers to the following questions: How many people in Washington County have received this letter? Did the WCEC coordinate with the State to target these voters? What will the WCEC do to stop voter intimidation and protect citizens’ freedom to vote?
WCDP calls on all members of our community to join us in standing up against voter suppression and intimidation. Ensuring the right to vote for all citizens is fundamental to our democracy, and we will continue to fight for fair and free elections.
