Today, as part of Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), we commemorate and honor our transgender and non-binary siblings, close and far, lost to violence in our communities. Started in 1999 as a vigil to celebrate Rita Hester, a trans woman killed a year earlier, TDOR is also an annual reminder that anti-trans and anti-queer hate kills. And, unfortunately, our hearts further break at the news of five more members of our community gunned down and many more injured at a shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs over the weekend.
While we send our love, care, and support, to the queer community in Colorado, we also want to call out those pushing anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in Tennessee and beyond. Right-wing activists and GOP politicians have been fanning the flames of hate for too long, then have the audacity to call for “thoughts and prayers.” Stop your hateful rhetoric and stop pushing discriminatory laws against the LGBTQ+ community!
