Local Democrats vow to fight for fair representation across our State
The Washington County Democratic Party (WCDP) condemns Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s call for a special legislative session beginning Tuesday, May 5, to redraw Tennessee’s congressional districts. This effort comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, gutting key protections under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, making it significantly harder to challenge discriminatory, racist district maps.
“District lines determine who has power over critical issues like public education, healthcare access, jobs, infrastructure, public safety, and the everyday needs of our residents,” said Sylvain Bruni, Chair of WCDP. “The Governor is attempting a racist and dangerous power grab. While the people of Washington County struggle with real challenges every day, state Republicans are focused on rigging the system to protect themselves and appease Donald Trump. This is an attack on democracy, fair representation, and the voices of our communities. WCDP stands firmly against any attempt to dilute voter power or undermine fair representation. We are committed to organizing, mobilizing, and fighting tooth and nail to ensure every voice is heard and every community is fairly represented.”
WCDP calls on voters and residents of Washington County to fight for fair representation by signing our statewide petition at https://wctndp.org/FairMaps.
