Washington County Democrats Build Momentum in Historic Primary Turnout Surge

May 6, 2026

Strong Democratic growth and organizing gains signal a changing political landscape in Washington County

The Washington County Democratic Party (WCDP) is energized by the results of the 2026 County Primary Election and deeply grateful to every voter, volunteer, and candidate who helped make this moment possible. While Republicans saw a sharp decline in turnout compared to 2022, Democrats increased participation by well over 1,500 voters, demonstrating growing momentum and a clear demand for balanced leadership in our county.

Last night’s results send a clear message: Democrats are organizing, showing up, and growing stronger in every corner of Washington County,” said Sylvain Bruni, Chair of the Washington County Democratic Party. “We are proud of every Democrat who refused to sit this election out. At a time when Republican leaders at the local, state, and federal levels continue to push policies that divide communities, weaken public trust, and ignore the needs of working families, our voters answered with action and resolve.”

A major driver of Democratic turnout this cycle was the recruitment of 14 Democratic candidates for County Commission, one of the strongest countywide candidate slates in recent memory. That investment in local leadership translated directly into stronger voter engagement across Washington County. Preliminary analysis of unofficial results shows Democrats representing more than one-third of voters in five districts and more than one-quarter in eight districts, marking substantial progress compared to previous election cycles.

These results also reflect years of investment in party infrastructure, community outreach, volunteer development, and voter engagement. From neighborhood organizing and direct voter contact to candidate support and grassroots mobilization, Democrats in Washington County built a coordinated effort focused on visibility and long-term growth. Even in an election where the Republican primary was highly contested and the Democratic primary was uncontested, Democratic voters showed up in force and significantly outperformed expectations.

WCDP now turns its attention toward the general election and the work still ahead. We encourage every Democrat, independent voter, and community member who wants responsible leadership, stronger schools, affordable communities, transparent government, and protection of democratic values to get involved now. Volunteer, donate, talk to your neighbors, and stay engaged. The momentum is real, and together we are building a stronger future for Washington County.
